How to Paint Laminate

by Jessica Hill
When I needed storage for our bathroom makeover, I found a way to paint an old laminate cabinet to make it fit the design.
Yes, you CAN paint laminate! It just takes a little extra prep work so that the paint doesn't scratch or peel off the surface. I used Old Village paint in Cabinet Makers Blue on this piece for our new bathroom makeover.
My parents had this old bathroom cabinet stored in their garage for years. It was the perfect size for our new bathroom makeover, but it needed a makeover of its own.
After lightly sanding the surface, I primed with KILZ adhesion primer. This primer helps to keep the paint stuck to the laminate surface.
The newly painted cabinet looks so nice in our made over bathroom, providing closed storage and extra color.

If chalk paint is used would you still need to prime?

That looks more like a contractor's oak cabinet. My cabinets are like plastic finish. I want to replace cabinet doors with glass doors, any hints?

I too LOVE that color. Me, I would have kept going and painted the vanity to match. Seriously, a very nice calming color. Great job. Thanks for sharing.

Looks nice, but I would have removed the handles and filled the holes, then painted and put handles lower...
