Custom Carved Dragonfly Duncan Phyfe Table

Here's a table I created by using a vintage Duncan Phyfe style table base along with a new 36" round wood piece. The carving was done with a dremel. Voila!
Here's the complete table. I used a vintage Duncan Phyfe style table base that had no top as my new table base. It worked great for the 36" round I bought at Lowe's.
I distressed the table just a little and used some dark wax to give it more depth.
I used a dremel with a flex shaft and some burring bits to do all the carving work.
The paint I used is General Finishes' milk paint in Halcyon Blue. The dark wax is Annie Sloan.

  • the dragonfly is so cool! How did you achieve it? Freehand? Did you draw out something first or use a stencil or something? Are you done?? I would like to see this done on raw wood and then after the carving do individual staining (sort of like painting with stains). The detail is so nice, you need to highlight it with something.

  • I actually wanted to keep it subtle so it worked out. I'd love to do a koi fish with color staining. I traced a pattern I put together and ran out from my computer then used a dremel to carve out the design. Thanks!
    • @GadgetSponge.com oh wow. I would love to see the koi!! I raise them. So once you trace the pattern on the wood, then you just go over it with the dremmel? What sort of tip do you use? I'd love to see that. You know what else would look cool in the engravings, are an inlay of ground stone like turquoise and lapis, etc. That would look amazing!! I did a practice inlay on this wood. Now imagine something like this in all those grooves you make!! wow.
  • That is beautiful! I would definitely go for it if it was a commissioned piece. I use burring bits for the dremel to get the carved lines in deep enough. Just have to go slow so you don't mess up your lines. Only have one chance! Haha.
