How to Prepare Your Concrete Floors for Dyeing or Staining

In our new home, I am super lucky to get my own studio/craftroom. The only problem I could see...it had carpet...and, oh yeah...one more problem...I am messy. I suggested to my hubby I remove the carpet and stain the concrete...he freaked out a wee bit...but eventually went along with my plan. I had a bit of guidance removing carpet from my dad...but other than that...this is my baby! By the way, the full post on the blog is VERY detailed and full of small things I learned. I have also posted the results as well!
The first step was to remove the carpet and get the floors clean. My carpet came up very easily. With the help of a claw hammer, a "Wonder Bar" and my protective equipment (gloves, eye protection, face mask), I went to town.
No more carpet and a blank slate for creating my concrete masterpiece.
I used products from Behr. Home Depot sells a kit for about $90 that includes much of what you need. My room is about 230 square feet. The kits says it works for 175-225 square feet. I had to purchase some additional Cleaner/Etcher. I also needed gloves (which could withstand acid), a face mask, and eye protection.
After I had cleaned, and cleaned, and vacuumed my floor was ready to be dyed - here is a sneak peek! There are a lot of steps involved in prepping your floors and THEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT. Please visit the blog post for ALL the details.

The preparation took me about 12+ hours, but it was worth it. The actual application of the dye, less than 30 minutes a coat!

I am thrilled with the beauty, warmth (seriously) and durability of this floor.

Be sure to check out how I dyed them later/tomorrow! (it is already on the blog)

@Magouyrkshona Not sure how to fix floors affected by tree roots...that is out of my DIY comfort zone. You will get different effects depending on whether the floors are textured or smooth. Home improvement stores sell an additive that creates a coarser grip so that the concrete is not too slippery.

Our screened porch has mildewy carpet over concrete. It does get we when it rains. I would like to stain/paint it but wondering if the paint can handle some water?

@Judy I believe the stain I used can also be used outdoors. I'd actually call the customer service number on the product you want to use to ask
