DIY Door Upcycle Into Mantel

I wanted a mantel to decorate but didn't want a "faux" fireplace, so I took and old door and made it into a mantel using reclaimed trims and wood from a 100-year-old house on our property.
My plan was to leave the door natural and just add a shelf, but when it didn't stand out from the other doors adjacent to it, I knew it needed to be painted.
After the first coat of paint, I felt the shelf needed to be beefed up, so I kept adding trim mouldling until I liked how it looked. I thought it needed brackets on the sides, so I combined a $5 shelf bracket from Lowes with a small piece of trim. I notched the bracket so the trim would fit and look like one solid piece.
I then added one more board to the top which was extended over each side, and baseboard moulding down the sides to define the bottom.
I caulked, painted everything white, than attached the whole door directly to the wall and to the stud for security.
I accessorized with exclusively inherited family items including an old candlestick that sat on the mantel in the original house where all the wood came from.
Now I have a beautiful mantelto decorate for every season.
This is such an easy project and my favorite door upcycle yet. It really makes this room cozy. You can see how it looks HERE. http://anita-faraboverubies.blogspot.com/2014/10/simple-autumn-mantle.html
