I do believe it was a chamber pot.

Does it look like it had had a fire in it? It may be for heating an oriental tea kettle.

no inside looks clean, more silver than copper does not look like there ever was a fire inside.

There are vent holes in the top so it is NOT a chamber pot. It could be a steamer or icer as mentioned in other responses.

Could be some type of food steamer, or my first thought was the same as @Chris aka monkey , that it could be for shrimp or caviar or something. Ice would go in the bottom, and the shrimpr or caviar around the edges.

Doesn't matter what it was originally meant to be used for, just use it for whatever you choose. Doesn't look anything like a chamber pot to me. I'd put crushed ice in the bottom and whatever you want to keep cold in the top, shrimp, veggies to eat with dip, whatever you want.

@Tresea Baker What is it used for? I still have no idea. The center circle is removable

Are you sure this is copper? In the photos, it looks like a piece of Indian brass. Does it have any markings on the bottom. Whatever it is, I'd have it on my coffee table just for its decorative effect. It's very nice and looks quite old. (I know this will sound weird, but the more I look at it, I'm wondering if it was used for cigarettes or something similar and the ashes collected at the bottom.)

I agree that it looks either Indian or Middle Eastern. If it is used for food i would line it so that the food does not touch the metal.

So...since I replied to this post in Oct. 2014, I'm just curious and wondering...what have you done with it so far?
  • Ginger Ginger on Mar 18, 2016
It looks like a brass, India incense burner.
  • Penny Penny on Mar 18, 2016
it looks like copper to me...and i would agree with ginger...an incense burner!
  • Elaine 82 Elaine 82 on Mar 18, 2016
incense burner might be right. I just looked at it again and there is silver metal showing through on some areas. There are no markings that I can find.

Gee, I'm re-reading my response of March 17/16 and can't believe I thought it might have been used for cigarettes!! Silly me! If it was intended for that, it most definitely would have had indentations to hold cigarettes and shaped differently. I'm now wondering if it was for incense but again, I think it would have been shaped in a different fashion. No matter its purpose, I'd love it on my coffee table! It certainly wasn't a chamber pot and I'd suggest not putting food on the top part as I'm uncertain it's safe for food.
