Some Tips on Roses

by Marcia Rayne
I live in Texas and have been growing roses for several years. I have Knockout, Belinda's Dream and Nearly Wild. I have about 20 total.
I have found they look much better planted en masse. Although the one in the photo is planted on the southeast corner of the house by itself. Plant in full sun.

Also, I try to water them thoroughly twice a week in the summer avoiding spraying the leaves directly. I use a soaker hose or lay the hose on the ground. I never use the sprinkler on them. The water is not good for the leaves. Learn to prune. Cut above a branch that has 5 leaves to increase blooming. When I plant them I add peat moss, cow manure , compost, and landscapers mix just to break up any clay in the soil. I have a lot of sand in my yard. I also build up my beds so they drain well. Fertilize at least 3 times a year. Four, if possible. You will have your neighbors stopping to stare at your roses. People driving by stop to complement us on our yard . Good luck and happy gardening!
