I see these beautiful tables set up like its ready for a fine dinner. Do some people leave that on the table? Or is that just how you can set for a holiday dinner?

If you don't use your dining room table day in and day out, you can set it with a beautiful table scape and leave it. They are beautiful to look at and serve as another way to decorate. We use ours everyday, so I don't set a table scape. I do however use the center of my table to decorate and change that out for the seasons. I only place items in the center portion so we can still eat at it everyday.

This is "just for show". I like to decorate my dining room table with a large bowl of seasonal items. Easy to clean and to change.

I used to do that in my other house when I had a separate dining room. Especially at Christmas i would set out my Christmas dishes with poinsettias and Candles in gold candle holders, with some huge gold pine cones. Now I can't do it. I had a lot of compliments on that old house.

As a real estate appraiser, I visit homes in all price ranges and the really highend homes you dont find the tables set. I sometimes think we I see tables set that the owner is trying to cover a flaw in the table or a cheap table. Just dont do it

@Pamela, as a designer I can tell you ...long gone are the days when there were set ''rules'' for this or any other kind of decorating for that matter...your home should reflect YOUR personality and taste...if you like things more formal AND you don't use the space very often then by all means feel free to set the table in a formal fashion... however, if you need use this table on a daily basis it would be too time consuming and cumbersome to leave it ''set'' all the time. Always remember, in order for your home to feel like "home"..it needs to reflect the personality of the family who lives there. ONLY you will know what's right for you...follow your heart and you will never go wrong.

@Amy Ogden-Paparone Thanks for the kind remark, however any designer ''worth her salt'' would give you the same advice. Your home may not be a castle...but it can be a ''Haven'' if you allow it to ''reflect your heart''

We are a family who uses our dining table for everything so we cant leave a nice formal setting and since we all love the vintage look we have a vintage wooden bowl with a dollie under it that my great great grandmother made that she had on her table from pictures I have of her showing
