Zinzer1-2-3 or Kilz for best primer adherence?

Have 100+ year old house. At some point, someone painted one set of stair rails. Must have been one of the earliest latex paints. It actually stretches in areas where I remove it! Just gums up a sander. Too awkward to use steamer. Brown wood rails underneath. Want to spray prime and spray paint. Want to know the best primer for sticking to this stuff. Thanks.

  • Both primers will work fine, however if you have a special paint you want to use, I would suggest that you purchase the primer that goes with the paint. Gumming up of sand paper is common with heavily applied latex or oil based paints. The stretching of the paint is also common. Its caused by heavy layers of paint that was applied. The same thing can happen with paint purchased today. Ideally a good paint stripper will do the trick. Takes some time, but gets you down to the original wood making the job look much more professional as the details of the spindles will show though the new finish once done.

@Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com Thanks. Never experienced this spandexing. Will choose between the two spray primers by checking on compatibility with a spray top coat. Know you are right about stripping, but details are showing - and have just had it. Among those types of tasks, am just finishing off treads - carpet glued over paint, then another layer of paint over some-type-of-lino glued over paint, more paint, and finally a bottom coat of red paint that has sunk into the wood where the original finish had worn off. However, the stain I'm using camos the red. I am so grateful!! Plan on gluing veneer over the risers. (Used a mask and had my shop vac with filter running when I did that work.) Thanks for listening! It was very labour-intensive.

Remove latex paint with rubbing alcohol. I had to use in in a 1970's bathroom painted BRIGHT yellow. Did not do the walls, just the woodwork. Was pretty fast working.
