Carved Concrete Fireplace Surround

The Chirping Frog
by The Chirping Frog
This is the first project I've done inside. It's messy so lots of prep-work but well worth the effort. You can personalize it and get as creative as you want. I am hoping to add stonework arches in the opening between the main rooms when we finish the basement as well as an "artwork" piece over the fireplace. We built this house a couple years ago, adding a concrete hearth and mantle as well..fun project!
Ready with a scratch coat. Time to get to work!
This is a vertical mix called Tru-pac that you throw on the wall and then add some texture with stamps and carve it out with a small pointed trowel. I worked in sections starting with the bottom.
Here's the top.
Here's a close-up showing some of the texture and depth.
Here it is getting prepped for stain. When you carve lots of releasing agent is involved and it needs to be cleaned off before staining/sealing, that's a fun process inside. Outside you simple power spray it- so easy. Inside involves spray bottles and a wet vac..fun, fun!
Here it is stained.
Here's some context, this is the LR with the eating area at the slider and kitchen off to the right.
