Can't find a pot rack you're crazy about? I had the same problem until I raided by hubby's workshop for a piece of walnut he'd planned to discard. Thinking outside the box gave me the ability to create an inexpensive and unique DIY pot rack.

A chunk of figured black walnut that my husband couldn't do much with because of the holes and slight fracturing in the slab. I couldn't find a pot rack that I was crazy about and willing to fork over a significant amount of cash for, so I decided to reclaim this from the scrap pile.

A few trips through the planer, a bit of sanding, a coat of boiled linseed oil, some sturdy hooks and chain, and it became a unique pot rack sturdy enough to hold my cast iron pots.

The wood slab rack is fairly heavy all by itself at 1.5" thick so it was important to make certain the chain and hooks were secured into the joists above the ceiling drywall. Molly bolts or drywall 'pig tails' would definitely not hold something this heavy - especially when you add the pots to the rack. If you want a more streamlined look, you can substitute the chain with heavy duty aircraft cable.

You can also add adhesive LED lights to the underside for additional lighting if the rack blocks out any light from above. Or add utensils, odds and ends.... or a vintage kettle you found in the barn. :-)
