See an Old Pallet Get Transformed Into Chic, Rustic Trugs

I love making new and beautiful things for free, or at least on a small budget. For me it's not just about saving a buck, but it's the process of transforming something unwanted and neglected into an item that's useful and stylish. I feel so satisfied making something for myself that I know would cost a fortune in a shop. With just a little bit of effort, creativity, and elbow grease you can do and make anything you please!
One of my favorite types of material to work with is pallet wood. Pallets are easy to get a hold of and the wood can often be used in a variety of crafts and furniture for both home and garden.

While on vacation I visited an antique shop and came across an old trug used for picking strawberries. I absolutely loved it but unfortunately couldn't take it with me. It got me to thinking that I could probably make something similar out of pallet wood though.
As soon as I got home I started making the plans up and before I knew it I had not one but two trugs!

Conveniently enough, I found that it's possible to make two trugs out of a single pallet. Other than the top bar, the right pallet can provide you with all the wood you need! Within an afternoon I had two gorgeous trugs just waiting to be shown off in the home and to friends and family.

I go through a lot more detail on my blog as well as my Youtube video tutorial for this project but these are the basic eleven pieces you need to create a trug. You can use glue or screws/nails to piece them all together.

And this is what it looks like when you're finished. It's a simple object that I think is simply wonderful! Leave the trugs as is or if you'd prefer, paint them, stencil them, and customize them to your heart's content.

The trugs you make out of pallet wood are gorgeous in both the home and garden. You could use them for displaying books and trinkets, storing paint, glitter and craft tools, setting up a tea party, or even loading with goodies and giving as a Christmas hamper. I decided to convert one into a pretty, lined planter and have seasonal flowers, veggies, and herbs growing in it.
