Can any one tell me what this tree ornament is, what it represents or what country would have these on their Christmas tree? It is carved, hand painted and sewn with thread. It is a beautiful piece. I recently bought a box of vintage ornament and I believe the owners were world travelers, I have so far found Italy Brazil Austria East Germany. Most items are from the 40's and 50's.

  • Eva, Slovakia (central Europe) I am glad to see you have got an ornament from my country. It is a very old kind of wood carving. Some woodcarvers make them to this day.

  • Gail, that is a stylized flying pigeon. It is a symbol of love, tenderness in our country. We used it as a wind chimes above the baby bed 100 years ago, later as an ornament on the Christmas tree.

This is a very specific form of wood carving - it's a fan bird and is made using a complicated process of splitting layers of wood - usually white cedar - and separating and moving the layers to form feathers. I've also seen it used to make native American headdresses.
