Barbara moles can be contolled is you get rid of their food. A helpful long term solution is to incorporate Milky Spore into the landscape. It is a bacteria that infects and kills the grubs that moles eat. It is not harmful to humans or other animals. If you get rid of the grubs then the moles will go elsewhere. I agree with KMS and HE that trapping and having a cat hanging around the landscape can help. Your county cooperative extension service may have a bulletin on the subject they can provide you with.
  • Mike has it right in my opinion. The moles are most likely there because of the ample food supply of grubs. Trapping might work for a short while, but if the grubs remain, other moles will move in for the feast.

Barriers are the most effective mole control. Dig a trench at least one foot deep and 10 inches wide around your entire vegetable garden or whatever. Then lay 8 to 10 inches of sheet metal or thick hardware cloth on the bottom of the trench and fold the material into an "L" shape so the foot of the "L" is pointing away from the garden beds. Extend the material about 5 inches above the ground to prevent surfacing and hopping into the garden. Then refill the trench with soil. Of course, this is impractical for entire yards, so traps are a good alternative. Here are some details: http://extension.missouri.edu/p/G9440

They are a pervasive Florida pest...you don't even need a lawn to have them. They tunnel beneath my paver walkway! Used to have a dog that dug them up and, well, let's just say, kept them 'under control'. They don't seem to hurt the plants, but the tunnels can be annoying. A cat may help.

We live in East Texas & have a terrible problem with this. My husband has put out traps, put those little beeping things all over that are suppose to keep them away, he's even sat outside with a shotgun watching their tunnels lol. I'll be sure to tell him about the milky spore & trenches.
  • Glad to hear that helped you out there Barbara. How did you go about taking care of the grubs and such to eliminate the mole food supply?
