Wood Block Christmas Countdown

Kids love counting down the number of days until Christmas so we put together this Christmas countdown out of some scrap lumber.
We slowly worked on this project over the course of a weekend. The kids were able to do a lot of the painting themselves, which was a fun job for them!
We started with these three wood blocks.
After tracing a star shape on a piece of lumber, we cut it out with a jig saw.
Each block got a coat of latex paint and then a coat of metallic acrylic paint.
To do the lettering on the blocks, I printed templates from my computer.
Cover each wood block with painters tape.
Lay the word template on top and secure it with more tape.
Use an X-acto knife to trace around the letters and then peel away the tape.
Put several coats of paint over the letters and when dry, peel away the tape.
For the top block, I taped off a square section.
And covered the exposed area with two coats of chalkboard paint.
We decided not to glue the blocks together because it's easier for the kids to write the number on the chalkboard if they can lay it flat. Our kids had a great time helping us make this Christmas countdown. Each morning, they are excited to erase the old number and put the new one up!
