Lessons of a Thermostat

Amazing what you can learn when you read directions. Hard to believe, such a simple thing, right? Here are two, well three, valuable things I learned from installing our new thermostat.
Our furnace was still cycling way too much it, despite the new blow-in insulation in our second floor ceiling. I did some online research; what I was reading suggested there could be a problem with the thermostat. Here's our old one above, by the way.
The new directions were a tad long, as indicated by our new boy Finn laughing in the background. The length was not a motivator to read them, yet for some reason, I did read much more than I might usually. (Come read more about this and Finn over on my blog, humboldtartdept.blogspot.com)
First lesson I learned: insulate around the wire leading into the thermostat. This will block any air from messing with the temperature gauging system. Very smart. Even though our thermostat is on an inside wall, I saw no harm in insulating.
As an aside, it really was super easy to take off and put up the new thermostat. It did only take fifteen minutes, twenty tops. Check for level on the new one and we're good to wire it up.
Second lesson? This particular thermostat has a cycling adjustment. I can set the cycling from 1 to 9, with one being most frequent, nine being fewest cycles per hour. Why did all the websites I read not mention this is possible?? So my tip: check to see if your thermostat has a cycling adjustment before deciding to replace it.
Third, and biggest lesson? Read directions more often. ;) Be sure to come read the whole story over at Flipping the Flip by clicking the link below!
