How do you smooth out drywall after removing wallpaper

I removed wallpaper in a bathroom and have tried to patch and smooth out the drywall but is it so bad I haven't had much luck. Is there a product that could be rolled on to even it out?

I have tried a skim coat of joint compound, and then a light sanding.

Skim coating and sanding is the only way to smooth it out. But if the paper layer of the drywall is damaged, prime it with RX-30 first. It's a special primer that will help the damaged parts stick down -- otherwise you'll get bubbles in your skim coat.

I had a bathroom like that - used a textured wall paper that is supposed to be painted - walls look smooth, bought it at Lowes or Home Depot.

We just went through removing wallpaper from 3 of our bathrooms. We added "knock-down" texture to two of the bathrooms. They look great! The third bathroom we used joint compound and added texture. It looks like stucco.

You apply drywall mud with a hopper gun. They cost about $100 at Home depot. The hopper gun shoots the dry wall mud onto the walls, then you smooth it down with a trowel. It's the same texture the builder used throughout my home. It's quite a process, but the end result looks very professional. We learned how to do it by watching videos on Youtube.

I would hit the unpainted areas with paint before wall papering. It is really hard to remove wallpaper from areas that haven't been primed.

The previous owner did not use primer on the bathroom walls, so it was a mess when I removed the wallpaper. I finally decided to gently sand the walls, I cleaned them well, then painted them a pretty pale taupe. Now the walls look slightly textured. They're very pretty!

I put a texture additive in my paint use a course one it fills in better as you paint.

This is one project I have called in a pro to do. Can be male or female! The cost more than made up for the time, aggravation, and lousy job I would have done trying to get a smooth surface.

Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas. I removed the wallpaper and the walls were terrible, I tired patching and sanding but you could still see the rought spots, I think having someone come in and do might be better for me. It's a small bathroom so shouldn't be to expensive.
