Polyurethane over vinyl flooring

Can you put poly over vinyl flooring? I found sheet vinyl for my kitchen that I really like but it is not the best quality. Looking to see if 3 or 4 coats of polyurethane will give protection.

I am skeptical, I would read the label and then test a small not readily seen area. I think it would peel off unless you rough up the surface which would ruin the product. Our not so cheap (we paid to upgrade it from builder grade) vinyl held up well as far as sheen and the top surface, the problem was that if anything was dropped onto it the vinyl dented and tore. I'm talking about a serving spoon dropping here in a brand new house where the flooring had been installed professionally. Same for the both bathrooms. The first time I cleaned behind the fridge it was done for. Peeled and tore by rolling out the fridge. It did not stain easily but it did "yellow" with age if that makes sense. That has been over 25 years, so I don't know if the same is true for newer products. If you are able to, use a key on the very corner of the sample piece they have in the store, does it dent or leave a mark plus any other ways to can think of to test it. We now have laminate flooring that looks like tile that can take a beating, I truly would not do laminate again ever.

@Opal I have also heard that the under floor/sub floor makes a difference as well. Ours is a concrete slab, I wonder if wood sub floor would have more "ease" so that the product could bend.

Ask for a sample to take home, then try the polyurethane on it.

Darla, that is a great idea. Also try rolling over it, dropping stuff on it and rocks in shoes etc. Let us know.
