From a second hand coffee table to a comfortable Bench - just the right size!
I picked up a used Lane coffee table for $10.00
Unscrewed the top, used an old "Memory Foam" twin mattress topper I sent my daughter off to college with a few years back...and then ....after sanding, staining with grey stain (2 colors to create a driftwood effect), a linen shower curtain (wrapped and stapled) and some nail heads....ta-daaaa...from coffee table to extremely comfortable Bench for less than $30.00
Finished!
It sits at the foot of our bed in-front of a fireplace... I used the same stain on a mantle and base to create a driftwood effect!
Several people have asked about the strength of the bench - since it was my first post I was afraid to add too much - but I see these questions would help - so YES - I cut "cross" support wood and screwed them in about every 10" as you can (probably) see - the lane coffe table had a complete support for the top all the way around anyway - but if your table does not - this is how to make it strong!
I have also been asked if I used the same top - YUP and it is VERY Cushy because i stayed with the wicker top - but you can always use plywood!
Staining - Last omission- the 2 small stains are what I used on the bench - I added the rosewood to the fireplace I am working on now - I will set up a second post with the fireplace mantle and base that only cost $12.00 total (using my already purchased stains) YES - that's it! look for the post
Ignore the mess that I make with the cans - I move fast and don't worry about clean up - but here is a close up of the product I used - notice that it says -"3X faster, covers in one coat, and dries in one hour" These are words I live by - LOL but be aware you do not need MUCH - and IT DOES soak in fast and cover the whole wood grain even with a little - but don't fret - just wipe real hard and take it off or add the overlapping color in streaks (not an all over pattern) let sit for a second and then rub in "streak" direction - It is a no fail process - just keep rubbing until you get the look- sand off or sand edges for an even more weathered look! I even step back a week later and add touches where I feel it needs it -
