covering black spots on furniture

Hello, I have a small side table that I have sanded down to bare wood and I wanted to stain it but it has dark black spots. My questions is what I can do to hide them so that I can still stain it, also I just purchased some calk paint and I wonder if I use that instead will it cover it or do I still need to prime it with something? Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
Regards
Debra

Can you post a pic? Dark spots can come from a lot of sources. usually sanding removes them. If the top is veneer then over sanding can be a real problem

No it is not veneer, it is an old piece of furniture I picked up at a tag sale. I decided that I am just going to use the calk paint. Thank you

I think you mean chalk paint?

Are you using an random orbital sander or are you sanding by hand? If you are sanding by hand you may just be missing the spot and not putting enough pressure in the right spot. By using a random orbital sander you get an even amount of pressure over a wider area and sand a greater area level. This will clean all the imperfections . What you may have is just some stubborn paint that you are not getting enough pressure on by sanding by hand. Start with 180 grit and then go to 220 and finish up 320 before you apply your finish and you will have a piece of furniture worth handing down to your children. Chalk Paint does not make a family heirloom, Natural Wood does.

I used a palm sander. I went with the chalk paint and it looks good. Thank you
