    I'll second @Leslie D on the use of Luan. you can not beat the price. For a bit of an upgrade you could go with oak ply to match better. If you get higher grade oak ply with oak on the front and back...the cases will look good from the hall way too. If I were doing this project I would dry fit the panels then pre finish them. Once they are finished I would install. Staining and finishing panels in a horizontal position is a ton easier
