Is this a weed? How do I get rid of it?

My husband got this jalapeno plant a few weeks ago. It started with two separate sprouts. One of them is doing pretty well, but the other is basically dead. It looks like there is a weed coming out of where the dead one was growing. How do we go about removing this weed? Do we need to replant it altogether? I assume the second sprout is not salvageable, but do we just rip it out or what? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • The "weed" may be cilantro. Cilantro leaves can vary in form so it might grow more characteristic leaves later. This might have started as a salsa garden of sorts with more than one kind of plant in there? Wouldn't hurt to wait and see... or have a taster chew on a leaf for you. ;)

It does look like it could be cilantro. If you don't dare do the taste test, you could rub a leaf in your fingers and then test for that distinctive smell. I don't see much life left in the second plant, but peppers' days are numbered in New York at this time of year anyway.

Thanks. I like cilantro, so I hope you're right - it would definitely be an interesting turn of events. If I wanted to keep the cilantro but get rid of the dead pepper, what's the best way to go about that? Of course, assuming and hoping I can keep it alive...

cillantro has leaves that are a lot more "spiky" on the edges

Yeah thanks @KMS, we've determined from the smell it's definitely not cilantro. So should we remove the bad from the good or remove the good and replant?

Id pull the weed and the dead pepper...and concetrate on what is growing well

Thanks guys. My husband pulled out the dead plant and weed and the plant has since flowers little white flowers and seems to be doing well. :)
