How to paint exterior house shutters

We've been in our house for over a year now, and we've compiled a list of things that we notice need a little updating. Near the top of that list (for me, anyways): painting our shutters.
Our current shutters are vinyl/plastic and are in *perfect* condition...in fact, I can't tell how old they are b/c they look brand new (but I know they're not). But, the longer I looked at them, the more the color was blah to me - depending on the light, they're brownish/reddish, with a tinge of wine-purple. blah-blah.
Learn how I painted them here: http://biddlebits.blogspot.com/2012/10/how-to-paint-vinyl-shutters.html

Biddle Bits on Oct 18, 2012Thanks, Lani! It really didn't take long to-do, was easy-peasy, and given it's on the *exterior* of our house, I couldn't procrastinate on finishing the job. Next on the to-do list is to replace our door with a more colorful one (and one that doesn't have a brass-rimmed stained glass oval insert) :)

Straight Nails Construction on Jun 04, 2013Unfortunately, you may have an issue. Many inexpensive vinyl shutters cannot be painted without some sort of primer. In fact, I use a SW bondable primer, once that is used to stick to most surfaces. If you look at shutters on the shelf of the home improvement stores, they will specifically state "not to be painted". So, you may want to do some research from those vinyl shutter manufacturers, and a quick coat of primer could be a "better safe than sorry" step.
