Inspiration needed

I have decorated my floating shelves with what I already have but am looking to change it up. I love essentially all styles yet the one my husband and I can both agree on is rustic modern. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

World Market has the coolest accessories and they're not expensive. If you don't have one in your area try going to their website but they don't offer everything there. change the frames to rustic barnwood type, use the lantern (its pretty cool looking!)- maybe antique it white, move the owl onto one of the shelves, maybe add a rustic twig basket filled with pinecones or toss a few onto the shelf.

Think you need some darker colours. Maybe the shelves could be more wood tone. Think all the white is not getting you what you want.

I love what you've done but I would add some rustic charm and drama by piling up old books and topping it up with an interesting antique object such as a paper weight.... A chalkboard leaning against the wall with a short cozy quote wouldn't hurt either... I would also layer some frames and create a cluttered collage of family pics.... Good luck!

Everything is white or off white. Are you going for the shabby chic look? I would put in pops of color to two of the frames in a bright pink or coral. Put a small pot of English Ivy on the top shelf and as it grows, drape it around your frames. It will surely bring some interest.

I think adding an corbels to your shelves will help give it a more rustic feel, especially with your modern shelves. You could do a different color or a stained wood instead of white. I'm think a thick chunky style, perhaps like http://www.pinterest.com/pin/176555247861294115/ or with metal like http://www.pinterest.com/pin/255860822549897743/. To me rustic has more natural elements, like previous suggestions, so I would try to add more wood, grass/plants, stone, etc. But at the end of the day, fill your home with the things you love and create your own style. It will surprisingly feel cohesive throughout with things you love.

Lots of fun ideas here. When I need inspiration I just do a google search. In your case I'd google "images of rustic modern shelf displays" or something to that affect. You'll get tons of ideas :-)

You've got some nice colors in this room. However the shelves are way too high. They should be at or closer to eye level while sitting down in the room. The shelves are modern, so are the items placed on them as is the room. The stag's head is a fun piece of wall art but it does not look rustic - so we would keep it modern and have fun with it rather than go out of our way to make this room look rustic. What seems a bit off is the way the shelves are staggered, it kind of messes up the balance of the installation. This looks like its a vertical wall so placing the shelves above each other would work way better. Also the lower shell is too close to the end of wall and the end of the room, to have any impact. We would move the bottom shelf directly underneath the top shelf. However, we would install the bottom one way down below eye level and prop up a piece of large but inexpensive Black & White print on it. The smaller items you could place next to the art print, on this shelf. On the top shelf directly above it you could place the larger items, family pictures etc., Lastly we would place the stag head towering above the shelves and above the room, near the ceiling (measure for clearance before hanging). Hope this helps.

I like the white shelves. If you want to add color then spray paint in a matte finish is your new best friend. I can't tell what the color is in the patterned picture frame (I think it is chocolate brown), but I would spray the deer head the same color (remember, you can change it back to white at any time with white spray paint). I would frame the letter "F" with a chocolate brown frame with a dark mat and a white background (so the letter stand out) and lean it against the wall on the far left side of the upper shelf. If you like the style of the two smaller white frames then spay them a new color too. Use larger books with more colorful bindings and lay them on their side with the small silver frame on top of them. The small metal lantern can be sprayed a new color or left the color it is. I would move the small plant and put the white pitcher (with the red berries) in its' place.

I think they are too high and too close together. That's limiting you ability to add variety in height of objects and color. If some books are standing up right others should be lying down to add height to a small object that might go unnoticed. Cover the books in scrapbook paper (just folded so you can remove) and there's your cheap color and consistency to the eye. Some sameness, some differences.

What I do is hit the best thrift stores on a weekly basis for a couple of weeks and snag interesting accessories that come in. I can always find something interesting for under $5.

It needs some color, interest and texture. Cascading plants, beefy candlesticks with colored candles. Put the F in a nice big picture frame that is a contrasting color.

Create a bigger gap between the two and lean some large picture frames with a thick mat (this is where you can go BOLD on color). Put small frames in front. Group in threes. Add trinkets, a vase of rocks from vacation, a photo of a map or postcard, etc

I spray paint jars of various shapes and sizes, grab some branches and paint them in a contrasting color and start putting them around. Easy & cheap..... Look around the house for those "outside the box" items and experiment.
