In 2009, we bought a second home on twelve beautiful acres in the Missouri Ozarks. We loved the land, but the house was a big compromise. First of all, it's a double-wide and every room needed a lot of TLC. We've been working on it ever since. My talented husband built this fireplace in our living room and I just love it.
Finished!
The fireplace was built using quartzite stone, laid in a dry stack using a high strenth mastic made for this kind of job. My husband stick-framed the supporting structure and covered it with concrete board, making sure that the joists underneath were strong enough to hold this additional weight.

The mantle was created with five sticks of clean pine, including two types of crown molding. I filled the nail holes and stained it, using a combination of oil-based stain until I was happy with the color, protecting the mantle with several coats of poly once the stain was dry. One note; most of the staining was done prior to installment, making this part of the job far easier.
Here you can see the work in progress. The mantle has been glued together and the stone is being installed.
My husband did an excellent job cutting the stone to fit perfectly against the complex ceiling contours. He has some serious math skills. :)
Onto the hearth now...
And now we can enjoy it.
One of our many views. Our dogs think they're in paradise every time we come down. :)
