Idea for a Rusty Old Horn

Angela A
by Angela A
Hi All! I picked up this....well, for lack of a better word, "horn thingy" (lol) at a thrift store the other day when looking for items for a different craft project. It just looked like something I could do something with...but now I am a bit stumped as to what to with it, other than sand it a bit and paint it...I was thinking it would make a cute "flower on a pick" for a garden area....I'm sure I could find a way of attaching it to a rod of some sort....anyone have any other ideas for it? I think it is made of copper......it's very lightweight... thanks!!

@Angela A it's really cool ! When i pick up things like this and i'm not sure what to do with it, I just wait. One day it will come to you ..... I like the idea of using it in the garden. You could get rebar or a piece of pipe and make a flower. I have an old metal floor lamp base that i would use. Have fun with it and post after pics !

How big is it? Might look very cool with a bit of TLC and a tillandsia (air plant) tucked in it.

It looks like it might have been the cone to an old phonograph...the type you had to wind up. It would make a great lamp shade whether hung or on a table/floor lamp. The rust holes in it just add to the charm it could give to a room as a lamp.

It looks like brass to me, which doesn't rust. The holes look like punctures and tears. It does look like it came off an old record player. You should have fun with this!

Thanks Doug, Renee, and Adrianne for the replies! It's not very big Doug, maybe four to five inches across the opening, love your idea! Renee, I saw one of those phonographs in an antique store one, and was thinking this very well could be what this is.... the punctures are defined so they were made that way....sorry the pics aren't better....thank your all for the ideas! You guys are awesome!!

The hole in the middle would be too small to have come from an old phonograph, as well as the overall size. With the seaming of the piece and the roughness to it, it appears to be something "handmade'. It would be a pretty flower or some sort of garden art, as you said. I myself, would not paint the brass. Lucky you!

thanks! I found, after trying to clean it up a bit, that the copper/brass color of it seems to be a paint (it flaked off a bit)....sooooo, i decided to paint it myself....I really liked @Doug's idea of the planter...(I'm always looking for things to turn into planters! LOL)...so far, I've painted it a bright blue color, and I'm pretty sure I can talk my "sweetie" into taking it to work with him and welding a rod of some sort to it to make it to where I can just stick it in the ground....then, I'm seeing a pretty yellow, or white blooming vining plant in it this coming up Spring....it already has drain holes, so it'll be perfect!! thanks all!! :) I'll post pics later!

Great idea! I would have made a hanging lamp out of it. I made a hanging lamp out of an old beat up trombone my son brought home

Just a thought, you could drill 3 holes around the top and hang the planter with 3 chains put an o ring in the top to connect the 3 chains
