Black scratch marks on sink

Vicki Wagner
by Vicki Wagner

We have a new white porcelain sink and somehow someone made marks that look like scratches, but you can't feel them, it's just that they are visible. I have tried everything to clean them, but nothing works.

Best tough stain remover

When everything else fails this Bar Keepers Friend is the cleaner that Amazon reviewers swear by!

use the white scrubber from Mr. Clean. Works real good. Will not scratch!
  • Carole Carole on Jan 11, 2015
If it has scratched through the surface white then cleaning won't help. You need something to paint on it to disguise the scratches. I wonder if something like Tippex (for typing errors) would work if they still sell it. You need to blend the black scratch with the white sink basically.

If it's porcelain, Bon Ami or Comet will get that off easily. If it's not porcelain, then those products will scratch the sink. The magic eraser will do as well.

I have this same problem! The black marks came from a metal pan and now trying everything from baking soda, cream of tarter, peroxide, Mr. Clean Eraser, nothing works! I'm going to follow your thread so I can hopefully solve my problem too! You are not alone!
  • CK CK on Jan 11, 2015
Hmmmm....my first thought too was Mr. Clean eraser. But if that or other cleaning methods haven't worked I'm thinking your sink may have a very light (thin) porcelain finish. Then the scratches might not be able to be felt but seen. I must admit I am somewhat 'blue skying' for a possible answer here.....but ya never know. OnBliss Street is right.....the scratches have most likely come from something metal. But how to get them gone.....let's all stay tuned to see.

I've a porcelain sink also...the marks from pans etc come off with Dawn soap or Scrubbing Bubbles spray foaming cleanser. I also have very hard water & use a lime hard water remover. Instructions on my sink from Kohler was to NOT use Comet so I don't as I was afraid of scratching. The scratches in your sink look different than regular use scratches...not sure what you can do for them.
    • OnBlissStreet OnBlissStreet on Jan 11, 2015
@Sandy Kluver Gomez I have a kohler cast iron/porcelain sink so I will try your recommendations.

Bar Keepers Friend, of course! An old product that is still great! Inexpensive, too.
    • Jac Jac on Jan 11, 2015
Right, @@Janinne P BKF is amazing! In addition to sink marks, it removes knife scratches from plates and discoloration from CorningWare. I used to rely on Comet but Bar Keeper's Friend fixes what even Comet can't.
  • Vicki Wagner Vicki Wagner on Jan 11, 2015
I have a feeling they came from the contractor that installed the sink. But I'm going to try the Barkeepers Friend next, as soon as I get to the store. I'll keep you posted.
  • Christine Spencer Christine Spencer on Jan 11, 2015

  • Judy Judy on Jan 11, 2015
I get those in my porcelain sink all the time. They're from metal rubbing against the porcelain. Ordinary cleanser, such as Comet, works like a dream.

I like Zud or Bar Keeper's Friend. But test first.

I always try SoftScrub, available at most grocery stores, on marks like this. So far, every one of them has come off. It works like Comet but is not nearly as abrasive to your sink.

I have used Comet and or Ajax and it works well also for bleaching a small sink - a trick my mother taught me -line sink w/ paper towels and pour bleach on the paper towels let it sit for a while

I had the same mark in one of our porcelain sinks. Had no idea what when or why, it just appeared one day. Couldn't feel the scratch mark either. I cleaned the sink with a baking soda paste then sprayed with hydrogen peroxide and placed a folded paper towel saturated in h. peroxide and let sit for awhile. Totally gone! After months, another 'scratch showed up and I just put another saturated paper towel and left it there for some time, and gone. Strangest thing!

So glad I came upon this in my google search! We just renovated and put in a white porcelain farm sink. There were so many tiny black "scratches" on the front lip after only three weeks. I thought we were doomed. Barkeepers Friend got rid of them, though using varying degrees of elbow grease!

I have a Kohler white pedestal bathroom sink that has mysteriously gotten black/grey streaks in it. It's a bathroom sink. It is not scratched. or scuffed from pots. Nothing has been dropped in it. I have tried everything & finally wrote to Kohler today, but it's Sunday. I have tried every thing all you ladies have suggested, which I know works on metal scuffs and I use all the time in the Kitchen. The only thing I haven't tried is the paper towels with peroxide which I will do as soon as I'm done typing. If that fails I cannot imagine what is going on. It's like the lines are leeching through the porcelain. Any ideas?

    Two solutions!

    1) dawn dish soap directly on the sink, sprinkle with powder bar keepers friend, scrub with a Lysol wipe and ta da - beautiful, glistening sink and no more marks!

    2) Tom bow Mono Sand Eraser

I've been trying to solve this problem for a while . Final solution : crest whitening toothpaste. I rubbed a big gob on with my finger and it started taking it off, but it was slow. Rubbed it in with a magic eraser and they just disappeared!

Have been trying all sorts to fix this problem , had some black streaks on porcelain bathroom sink. Even tried bar keepers friend which didnā€™t work. In the end tissue soaked in Bleach and left for a while did the trick ! Thanks for the suggestion

Had the same issue after a faucet replacement by a plumber who had his power tool touch the enamel and leave black scuffs... Nothing worked at first: not baking soda, nor vinegar, or toothpaste. HOWEVER! Barkeepers Friend with scotch pad worked! But the 'trick' was that after scrubbing I left if on for long, some 10 minutes (!-- the instructions on bottle are to leave it on for one minute only--that DID NOT work...-) and was amazed upon my return! Almost completely gone! SO I repeated: applying and scrubbing again, leaving on for 10 minutes and, a last slight scrubbing and the ugly black scuffing was completely gone (other than to the feel by, say, passing a finger... but no longer any blackness etc.)...

  • Try Cerama Bryte. It works like a charm. I restored my old white porcelain sink with it. I wrote an entire post on it on my blog. Magic.

  • I would try a Magic Eraser. If the marks are are etched, try bleach.

  • Chloe Crabtree Chloe Crabtree on Jun 16, 2021

Barkeeper's friend will work on this, i had the same thing on my farmhouse sink, worked great!

  • Arron Winsor Arron Winsor on Jul 01, 2021

    This works a charm:

    1) Spray bathroom cleaner on the grey marks

    2) Add some toothpaste

    3) Use the green scotchbrite side of a kitchen washing up sponge to rub in circular motions for about 30 seconds... You have to press down quite hard on the sponge.

    4) Maybe step 1 is not needed but all 3 steps done together is what just worked for me šŸ‘ļø

  • Bar Keeper's Friend and a little scrubby pad will clean this right up without any elbow grease or hassle. Works on plates too for silverware marks.

  • Kosta Kosta on Feb 27, 2022

Use lemon juice or white vinegar. Let it sit for a minute and some light rubbing with a paper towel wet with vinegar and the acid will take out the aluminum scratches from a pan on your porcelain sink!

I have the same issue with my vitreous china bathroom sink. I don't know where the scratches come from. What works for me is a few drops of Bar Keepers friends rubbing it with a microfibre cloth......remember mine is a bathroom sink. If yours is a kitchen sink you may need more than a few drops....but my scratches come back in a few week....Im miffed as to where they come from.

If I were you, I would contact the folk you purchased it from and ask them why scratch marks have appeared. Could it be a fault? Not enough porcelain ? Maybe they will replace it for you or give you a solution to the problem you can do yourself. Good luck!
