I would paint it a soft blue (like robin egg blue) so it pops off of your tan walls. YOu have hardwood floors, so a fresh color on the furniture would stand out. And then I would spraypaint those lamps red.

By the name of your blog I'm thinking you might be drawn to Mid Century Modern furniture which this piece is from. If you really love it, please refinish it. It may only need a good cleaning and polishing. At the most I bet some Restore A Finish would bring it back to it's glory days. It looks to be made from Ash which was popular in that era along with Walnut. It really would be a shame to paint it. I would guess it's solid woods and wood veneer over solid wood.
