Computer Desk Makeover

This old beat up computer desk had seen much better days & it was time to send it to the dump or do something to make it look better!
Let the transformation begin! I started by completely sanding off the old finish on the desktop, & lightly sanding the old hunter green base a bit just enough to take the gloss off.
Better look at what the top looked like when I started the project.
Once sanded down, I painted the base black, put a couple of coats of red oak stain over the entire top, let it dry overnight. The next day I covered the entire top with clear contact paper, measured out & marked it with a harlequin diamond grid marking X's where the diamonds would be left on the top before staining again.
Using an Exacto knife I carefully cut out the diamonds to be stained in a darker stain.
Once the diamonds were cut & removed I used a dark Jacobean stain on the exposed diamonds, & let it dry before removing the contact paper from the lighter stained diamonds.
Once all the staining was dry & contact paper removed all it needed was a few coats of clear satin urethane to protect it.
Before & after of the desktop. Much better looking now I think! :)
