Crossette turns into a Rosette with Carved Acanthus Center

Every once in a while you run into an architectural detail that, even as an experienced carpenter, you have never seen before. Some doors and windows have Rosettes at the corners and some have Crossettes (small projections of the head casing beyond the casing legs), but this is a Crossette than turns in on itself in a "square spiral" that resembles a rosette. It also has carved acanthus leaves at the center. I would love to recreate this sometime.

Ah that makes perfect sense. I knew that when I was in art school for fashion illustration we had a class on the history of costume, but I didn't think it was part of carpentry apprenticeship. I love learning the history of all sorts of art forms.

Sheila you may have hit the nail on the head. We're not retired, but we plan on this being our last home which is why we are going the extra mile with it's finishing touches. Granted nothing as beautiful as the above since we are novice woodworkers at best, but it's not basic trim either.
