big beautiful home, huge lack of decorating = need HELP!

We have a nice beautiful big home that my husband built 13 years ago and it is yet to feel like home. When it comes to decorating the interior of our home, I am not very good at it, I have lots of stuff to decorate with, just need some direction in where to put it. If there is anyone willing to look at some pictures of a few rooms and give me some ideas of where to put everything, I would forever be grateful. I am not sure how to get back to my posts on here so if you are willing to help me out a bit could you please shoot me an email at fillhardfarm at ymail dot com. I will also try to follow up here too. The rooms that I am ready to do something more with are a 16x24 living room, a 9x30 entryway and a large kitchen with open concept dining room. I will post pictures here or send them to anyone willing to help me out and of course will share pictures of the after too.

here are pics of livingroom and entryway, we are in the process of cleaning floors in the entryway and I am ready to really do some decorating there, it is currently all white, thinking about painting the walls and ceiling a sage green color living room is currently multi tones of green sponged on the bottom of the walls and the upper walls are a beige color, all curtains are hunter green

my only comment would be that I have tab top curtains that I have hung higher than the normal person would because I don't like seeing "air" through the tabs (if that makes sense) ok, had to get up and go look now.....the tab is above the window so when they are closed (which is never) you can't see window. I like the "rustic" theme too, maybe incorporate more of that in your room, with oars or canoes, etc.

I see you added pictures while I was typing. The best thing I can tell you is to get organized. I think that's the most important part of any homes decor. A beautiful home, such as yours, will never have that "like home" feel as you said you wanted until it's organized. Before I comment on arrangement let me ask if there's any way at all you can put the TV on the south wall? Even if you have to rerun cables under the room in the basement I think it would make a world of difference in your layout. The cable and DVD boxes can sit on top of the TV itself so you'd have more room there than you do now with the sofa and stacked crates. As for your other needs I highly recommend making liners for the crates you have now and using them as bins/baskets on your shelving units to hide all the smaller items. This alone will minimize the disorganized look so many small items give to a room.

Becky, thanks for the comments, part of the disorganization in the entryway is the fact that we have it tore apart to deep clean but stuff everywhere is a problem because I don't have a good way to organize but I love your basket idea, will be working on that real soon. The problem with the TV on the south wall is that you are then sitting too close to it, that is where it was before and the whole family hated being so close and when the kids have friends over, they want the room to play the wii. I think if I could use some crates and baskets on the shelves instead of the totes and mismatched lego and knex boxes, that would help a lot. My original thought was to put curtains on the shelves but I think I would like the baskets and crates better and I know that I have sewing directions for making liners. I would love to then do some kind of display on the tops of the shelves and/or the tv but not sure what to do. Right now there is a big picture, shelf and candle holders above the tv as there used to be a chair there before we got the larger tv and had to move the tv to that end of the room. I have some really cute baskets, lots of different kinds of candles and candle holders just not sure what to do there. My other big problem in that room is the big bay window that is to the right of the tv and shelves on the north facing wall. I have a couple plants stands that could be used there but not sure that is the route I need to go. Off to see what I have for fabric that I could use for liners, I'm sure that I don't have enough of anything to do them but I could make a test liner just to get the idea. Ah yes.....video games and TV placement can cause problems. I didn't comment on the entry way yet because I figured it was a work in progress. Anyway....I think you'll be much happier with bins instead of curtains. If you want canvas liners think buying a large painters drop cloth. I'll check back later. Hubby is home and it's time for dinner.

You need a focal point in the Living Room. The gas log fireplace would be a good place to start - maybe beadboard or panelling behind it plus a mantel shelf that would simulate a fireplace - even a vintage mantel. You have too many small things - it makes things look cluttered with nowhere for the eye to rest. Try thinking of fewer but larger accessories and reserve the small things for smaller spaces (beside a door, for example). Is your husband extremely tall? - the reason I ask is that your pictures seem to be hung extremely high - the center of a picture or grouping of pictures should be about eye level for an average height person. You mention having lots of candles and holders - don't make the mistake of putting out too many small things - make them part of an arrangement - try 3 coordinating candles on a tray with other decorative items - vary heights, think in odd numbers, think texture. Becky's basket idea is very good to contain less decorative items that you need to store in the room. Study some of the tablescapes and wall arrangements on this site that you like and see if you can figure out what makes it work. Everyone who posts will probably be willing to answer questions about what they have done. Learn to navigate this site and you'll have plenty of inspiration and advice.

One of the best way to make a space feel bigger and more open is to reduce the overall quantity of furniture and clutter type items. In many of the pics I see furniture and things all butted up against each other with no "open spaces" along the walls. To me good design involves both positive and negative elements. Furniture and art being the positive and open space being the negative.
