I bought a beautiful old outdoor iron urn at a garage sale. It is very rusty. I would like to clean it up and paint it. What is the best way to remove the rust?

  • Prepping the piece is dependent upon how nooks and crannies it has. If its simple a wire brush and elbow grease should do it. If its more complicated you can purchase soft wire brush attachments that can be used on a drill. These cup brushes come in fine, or course textures. Use the soft or fine ones. Wear eye protection as the wires do break off. In no time it will be ready for a fresh coat of paint.

Another way to remove rust is to make a paste mixture of vinegar and cream of tarter.

Try using Coke. Spread it on with a sponge, let it sit a few minutes, wipe it off. It works on other metals.

Don't use coke , it eats right through . Use a metal scraper that looks like a scrub brush . Gently . Then you prime with rust proof primer and paint with outdoor rust proof paint . I love rustolium products .

Id try coke. But if the 2 easy ways don't work then take a wire brush and hit it then paint with some rustolium paint

Coarse salt is used to clean cast iron pans; should work on your urn. Rub it in with a plastic brush. You might also finish the same way as the pan by coating it with oil and heating in the oven - open side down.

I used to take rust off my driveway with Avon's Skin-So-Soft, but never tried it on steel or metal of any kind. Worth a try. Whatever you use that works, put some sort of sealer on though. I used to paint old saw blades and after sanding off all the rust, if I didn't first seal them, the rust would come through the paint in a short time.

go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get Naval Jelly!!! Be sure to use it outside and wear gloves and keep your feet covered. If it gets on you be sure to wash it off immediately. But it does work!
