DIY blind for window

Is there any ideas for a DIY blind for arch window, that lets too much light in. The market cost for one is "way-over-my-budget" to buy one! My arch window is 42 inches wide, and about 36 inches high.

  • Do you have a picture of the window? It would really depend if it is a stand alone arch or an arch over a standard rectangular unit.

I solved this problem in a couple of different houses. Take hot water plumbing pipe and some fittings. The hot water pipe bends better than the regular pvc. (I think it is called cpvc) The top will curve into your window opening and then you connect at the bottom with fittings that allow the bottom separate piece to lay flat across. Sew a casing in a piece of material and gather that along the top piece that will be curved. At the bottom, I just tucked under. The key is to use enough material. So measure your top piece and triple.

I would try the paper temporary shade. You can either cut them to shape. Place the sticky side on the flat part of half the window and curve it around. Here is a picture from pinterest.

at home depot or lowes they sell window vinyl in beautiful patterns that installed look like stained glass. They are very easy to lay on and cling to the glass as well as peel off easily. I would do the top part of the arch to where the window starts its horizontal line. Hang a rod straight across for whatever window treatment to keep out the light you want from there. This way you can open the drapes when you do want to see outside.

I placed a very large Asian fan in my arch window. Here is a link to something similar on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Oriental-Feng-Shui-Fan-Flower-FAN022/dp/B001M5YR0Q/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hg_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=0YFW0KBYPZ208QK1BGY6

A stained glass arch would be beautiful there.

@Belinda Todd YES! But my hubby quit doing glass stain works of art, 6 months ago! Selling all this equiment1 :( But nice feedback, thxs!
  • For something like this, I'd use frosted window paper. I have Octagon's that we used it on because the glare was unbearable. Here is a picture that sort of shows it. Sorry, but it was the best I could find.

Had the same problem...my window is 6'x3'...I bought 2 corrugated paper shades & folded one end on each to make 2 fans stapling the bottom...then I cut a large cardboard box into a semicircle I placed in the middle of both fans..with some adjustment by trimming the stapled end...allowed the fan to fit snug...looked good inside & out:-)!
