How to Build a Trellis for Climbing Roses

Nothing says romantic, cottage garden like climbing roses. Learn how to build a trellis for climbing roses and add climbers to your garden this season.
Climbing Rose "Dream Weaver", above, offers long-lasting color and fragrance. It is very hardy and a good rambler, although the canes need training or tying in order to get it to climb up a trellis.
This three-slat trellis was made from scrap wood. Cut the slats to the appropriate length - about 6 feet. Affix with a bolt in the center and then fan them out. Add the middle slats and a heavy-duty post to anchor the trellis.
This rose arbor was made from scrap lumber. Four anchor posts were center in place, and scrap lumber nailed to form the arches. The roses must be trained or tied gently to the posts in order to get them to "climb". This is the Dream Weaver climbing rose.

Are the corner posts 4x4's and are they set in cement to add durability? I'm thinking about this idea for my Concord grape vines.
