How to Clean a Can Opener

Do can openers even need cleaning? I didn't think so until I took a good look at my own can opener and saw all of the goo and grime. I remembered every time I use it, the can juices usually seep onto the wheel and surrounding areas.
You will need:
Microfiber cloth
Cotton swabs
White vinegar
Toothbrush/ toothpick

Before
Use cotton swabs, or a tooth brush dipped in white vinegar to scrub away the grease and grime.
Dip a soft cloth in white vinegar and wipe the flat parts of the can opener clean.

I just read an article the other day that said the kitchen (not the bathroom) is dirtiest room in the house. It listed the 10 dirtiest spots in the kitchen and the can opener made the list as it can harbor all kinds of harmful germs like Salmonella, E. coli, yeast and mold. This article said simply rinsing it off was not effective in killing the germs but running it through the dishwasher after each use was okay and actually an effective way to clean it and kill the germs. For anyone curious about the other 9 dirtiest spots in the kitchen, they were food storage containers with rubber seals, rubber spatulas, counter tops, blender gaskets, cutting boards, refrigerator meat compartment, refrigerator vegetable compartment, the sink, and (no surprise) sponges and dishrags.
