Winter soil care

When we think about winter gardening, soil care isn't usually the first thing that comes to mind. But taking just a little care with our soil now ensures that your garden will be healthy and ready to grow come spring.

Tammy, I am near the beach in Florida and have very sandy soil as well. All you can do is introduce as many organic materials as you can. The coffee grounds are a good idea. At a botanical garden in Miami they take all the grounds Starbucks gives them. Pots are certainly the way to go if you only have a balcony. Are there garden centers where you could buy some bagged compost?

  • Tammy, Douglas has great advice. Organic materials, and keep 'em coming. Though if you are gardening in pots you should always used a bagged potting soil mix, never soil from the ground.
