Need help painting paneling

We have 9' tall ceilings in our living room of our 100 year farmhouse. It has paneling on the walls that is smooth and dark and I want to paint it. Other than giving it a good cleaning to remove any dust and dirt, what type of paint would I use to cover and lighten?

I painted my dark paneling with a latex paint and it turned out great. I also added an additive called Floetrol ( Bought at Lowes or Home Depot). The Floetrol gives it a longer wet edge to allow for roller & brush strokes to smooth out.

@Susan Thanks for you input. I am not familiar with Floetrol but will look into it. I can see that it will be hard to make the brush strokes even since the paneling is smooth.

We painted my daughter's wood-paneled playroom a light green, and it looks amazing! Check out our process and recommendations here: http://www.rathersquare.com/2013/12/painting-wood-paneling-brushes-rollers-beer/ Be sure to use an oil-blocking primer to seal in any wood oils before painting. Good luck!

If you have 100 year old paneling the chances are great it has an oil based varnish finish and in order to get the paint to properly adhere you're going to have to primer the surface. I would also highly recommend you use some type of degreaser the a deglosser to prep the surface. Primer and then top coat using a decent quality paint.

@D & K Thank you. I don't think the paneling is 100 years old, all of the wall are done with the old time plaster and lattice. This room had the paneling put over the plaster sometime in the 60's were are told. I am going to clean it again really good, prime and give it a go.

@Kim you have quite the project ahead of you. You haven't mentioned if the paneling is 100 years old or not. If it is the less expensive stuff from the 60's and 70's it may require a different technique. If it is real wood you could do a light sanding and then prime and paint. If it is not you will need to clean well, light sand and clean again and then prime and paint. Perhaps @KMS Woodworks could shed a more professional outlook on your situation if you provide the info about what kind of paneling it is.

@Gail Salminen Thank you. I think the paneling is was probably installed in the 60's, best I can find out. I don't think it is solid wood. KMS Woodworks gave some good ideas as well.

I would start with a quality primer like SW preprite - problock. ( this is after a good TSP cleaning ) once primed you should not have too much trouble with a basic paint job.

@KMS Woodworks Thank you. I have cleaned the paneling once and will do one more time. I thought that we would probably have to use a good primer. I am up for the job, so thank you again for you help.
