Decorating with brown oak antiques

When we got married, my husband had a house full of antique furniture that he loves. I love it too, but I would like to incorporate some more modern and colorful decor to accent the pieces. As of right now, the house has a more western look, which I am trying to get away from. The walls in the living room are a light island blue green, and the bedroom walls are a light yellow. I do love the paint colors. Thanks!! Sheri

Not sure exactly what you are asking. We have a good many oak antique pieces, several coming from my husband's grandmother. They aren't my favorite but my husband loves them. You can easily mix antique pieces in which more traditional furnishings. Not sure how "modern" you are wanting to get but I wouldn't think modern, contemporary glass & chrome type furniture would not mix with the antiques as well as more traditional. However, you can get rid of the western look by changing out your accessories. Use colorful accents such as pillows; choose wooden candlesticks for a mantle; with wooden floors use a colorful or muted rug. Check out various home magazines or look on Houzz.com or hgtv.com for inspirational photos.

Hello! my rule of thumb when it come to modernizing an antique setting is neutralizing the backdrop using a neutral trendy color,which in today's case is grey. Grey, as we all know, comes in many shades, more than 50 actually... <-- a little sense of humor there, sorry. I think a golden shade of grey (grey with a warm undertone with reds or yellows on it's mixture) is very neutral and elegant, a classic if you ask me... You can pair it with any wood color and it helps to add more focus on the furniture rather than the walls. Good luck and please post some pics of your decorating after you're done :0)

I agree with the grey. Shy away from colours typical of the Era. Use current accents, and patterns, maybe even some industrial touches in hardware and lampshades...antiques can even often pull off an eclectic or bohemian (boho) vibe really well!

If you love the colors and are looking to simply update, how about throwing in some bright accent pieces that compliment and 'pop'? You might be surprised at how different a room can be made to look by adding brightly colored throw pillows, valances and/or curtains, table scarfs, unusual candles/candle holders, vases, candy dishes, even 'coffee table' books! How about a lamp or changing the color of the shades? With silk flowers looking so real, one of my favorite touches is making an arrangement using blended and accented colors to pull it all together. @Sheri Zahner perhaps if you posted some pics of the pieces it would be easier to advise you. You can mix antiques with modern quite easily. Looking at the colour tone you are incorporating should be considered - not mixing blonde wood with the dark oak, however painted pieces could work quite well. Sometimes only a matter of adding accent pieces - pictures, nick naks, draperies etc. If you do post some pics people may come back to provide more tips and tricks.
