What should I do with this dated mirror?

Usually I can find some ideas or inspiration on what to do with an item like this, but this time I am at a loss. I am open to any ideas ! I really like renewing and reusing old or hand me down items. Looking forward to all the creativity out there! Thank you for taking the time to look at my post.
This mirror is just under 20 inches . It has gaps in between the smaller mirrored peices that make it hard to clean and collect dust.

The mirror is a classic. Hang it in the bedroom on a wall painted a deeper color to showcase it, or create a nice vanity table and hang it above for a special feminine look.

Do you have table base you could use it as a side table top for? might look cool with that pipe table base that was also posted today

How about some transparent glass paint and apply various colors to the tiles? It would look fresh and very unique! I use Pebeo Vitrial transparent glass paint. You can also use Liquid Lead to fill in the gaps between the tiles. That will give the painted squares the look of stained glass. For cleaning between the tiles, try some canned air :) I wish I had this mirror!

I love it just like it is...just needs deeper color behind it.

I agree with Staria, it's a beautiful mirror but looks lost on your wall. Placed on a bright colorful wall would really make it pop

I noticed that several people posted how much they like the mirror--so someday you might like it again too--but for now--how about a mirror makeover that could be reversed someday if you change your mind? Here's what you need: old black and white photos; water soluble glue that dries clear; spray starch; glassine envelopes (used by stamp collectors). Print photos on the envelopes using a laser printer, then unfold all seams of the envelopes. Lightly glue to the mirror. Spray with spray starch. Let dry. Apply another layer of paper, this time using only the spray starch to get the sheets to adhere to eachother. You'll get a wonderful wrinkled paper photo look--this works great for making lampshades too. Lots and lots of layers!

    This mirror is dated?

I would go the the Goodwill or Rehab outlets and look for a round wooden frame that would hold the mirror - you could paint the frame any color that works with your interior, and if you wanted to change it back at a later date it would be easy just take off the frame and use it elsewhere

Thank you all for your input. I guess I seem to be the only one that thinks its dated. It reminds me of the 90's when disco balls made a come back. But I am in the planning stages to paint the house so I will try that first before I do anything drastic to it. I really do like the temp fix ideas . I have been looking for something that would fit on top or infront, but no luck so far.Thank you all for your time ! I asked and you answered! It's nice to know there are so many helpful people out there. Have a lovely weekend !

If you need a change, brass is back. What about gold leafing it?

Shells? Paint like flower petals? Like sun rays? Put little solar lights on it? Coins? Just some ideas:) Maggie F

Personally I love the mirror as is. As one other person wrote, sometimes when you move things around in your home, they look new again. You said you're going to paint. That alone could give the mirror a whole new look. And sometimes if you think of it as "vintage' instead of "dated", you get a whole new appreciation for items too :-)

Find a small table roughly the same size as the mirror and glue the mirror on top of the table

I too like the mirror as is, but if you want a change that really matches your decor why not try painting the edges. You could use the same base color and lighten a couple batches in varying degrees, either for an ombre effect or an alternating colors look. Play, have fun, and scrub off if you don't like.

I move my things from room to room so I don't get tired of them. I also store some and pull out the ones I haven't seen in a while. Perhaps hanging other items with the mirror to enlarge the display area? I love the mirror as it is...it's lovely.

If you mount it in a chic round frame, it would change the look. You could do that, and also use glass paint ("fake stained glass" paint) to tint one or more rows of the tiny mirrors around it. OR maybe glue some jewels on some of the mirror pieces. Finally, you might be able to etch/frost some of the mirror "petals" and create a pattern.

That mirror is fabulous as it is! It takes the current vintage sunburst revival to a whole new level! If you MUST change it, do something that can easily be removed so the mirror can be restored.

Its a beautiful mirror but I understand how after you've had something for awhile, it gets boring. My suggestion is to leave the mirror and make a backing for it, something that will come out from the back of it, holly or garland at Christmas, leaves in the fall, feathers or make a wreath that will encircle it. You can change it on a whim that way.

Love the mirror; it is beautiful.

  • Charl Charl on Mar 22, 2017

Please...leave it as is!! That is so in style right know. Can go with modern, contemporary or rustic style. I personally love rustic glam style which is so popular right know. It definitely is not dated...just saw one just like that at Homegoods...love that store!! It would be a show stopper on a wall in an entrance hallway.

I think its a beautiful Mirror ,what I would do instead if doing anything to the mirror ,use it in a grouping as a focal point to an area i.e for the grouping use scones on each side either a flower arrangement or Candle holders with popping colors to enhance the all white or grey wall that you have . Colors that flow into your décor. there is much you can do when it comes to using it in a grouping. even two small bright color plate holders on each side . You could make your own plates using matching fabric as curtains etc. I made some plates using toile came out real lovely. Enjoy and have fun.

Group with 2 other round mirrors of different sizes. Very mid-century looking mirror! You could sell for some good $$.

  • Loretta Loretta on Mar 26, 2017

I too love it as it is, but if you must change it you could also do some etching or frosting of either the middle with some design either left as clear mirror or the reverse where the design is left clear. Or you could do some etching just around the outer rim of the center piece, looking organic and freestyle, not rigid lines. Or you could etch/frost some or all of the outer " petals" for lack of a better term. But this would be a permmenant change, as would the glass painting. I wondered if there would be some kind of way to use fabric or wall paper or scrapbooking paper on some of the petals, but can't figure that out. There are such gorgeous fabrics and papers anymore, I thought if you did a French type motif with maybe black and white on the petals, or just black on some of them so it looks kind of black and silver. I know there are women out there who could do what I am imagining and make it gorgeous, but I am not that woman!

Another imagination I had, since I just saw a bunch of flower stained tables and dressers, would be to use the whole mirror as though it were a flower and then very lightly etch lines that define it as a flower. Again, not something I can do, but I can imagine!, I have an artistic mind, just does not connect with my hands sadly :(

good luck what ever you do or if you do nothing!!

Nothing dated about this mirror. I would love having it just as it is.
