You can buy exterior spray paint at Home Depot, Walmart, Loew's, etc. Best to use multiple thin coats and let dry 2 hours between coats.

If it is wrought iron metal furniture:  We scrub ours down with soap and water, then if needed hand sand the rusted areas.  Mu husband puts down large sheets of cardboard in the back yard and then spray paints the chairs.  We use Rustoleum...from Ace Hardware.  It might take a couple of coats. Spray until well covered but let dry between spraying. We have had ours for at least 20-25 years and they all look great.  We have black and white.  Now if you have aluminum...that is different.

You will need to at least wipe the furniture down first. I usually spray it with the hose and let it dry several hours. Then just use a high quality exterior metal spray paint and spray in even long strokes until the coverage is even. If it needs another coat let the first one dry real well then apply the next coat. I've done it many times with great success! Let it dry a couple of days before using it.

After a few years Rustoleum will start to peel off if out year round. I found that appliance paint spray is tougher and doesn't peel because of cold wet weather.I sprayed appliance paint, let it dry then sprayed hammered metal silver for the top coat. 12 yrs later, still on the chairs.

I purchased some paint from a local Menards Store and it is supposed to be for metal and give it the finish that metal has. I would hose your furniture down real good...spread your drop cloths and start from the bottom (upside down). I picked up an old rusty patios set last summer and am looking forward to transforming it. I already have the rust off, etc., so I shall spray away. Good luck....think the tip before mine sounds great regarding appliance paint first then the metal. Good luck.

I used rubbing alcohol on a cloth first to clean the metal chair up and then bought a spray can of a metal paint. Note: If you think you might not have enough paint spray the outside of the item first & save under a seat last as that will not show when done. Also easier to tip the chair for the underside of the arms.

Do not, do not, whatever you do DO NOT use spray paint in an area without adequate ventilation. Not only is it spray painting your lungs, but the propellent will go straight into your brain.

Hi Carolyn, before you start clean furniture first. If there is any rust, remove with a stiff wire brush. Once the prep work is done and everything is clean and dry, you are ready to paint. I would suggest using Rustoleum. They have loads of colors to choose from and built in rust protection. You might want to go with 3 coats of paint. Remember light handed spraying is the secret to success.
