Free Antique Dining Table and Chairs Get Renewed

Sue P.
by Sue P.
We were given a large, antique dining table with three leaves and 8 chairs. They were in somewhat rough condition, including a damaged table leg, scratches on the table top and two chairs that were beyond repair.
The table top needed to be sanded and refinished.
The cream-colored chair cushions were stained. Here you see where I recovered the cushions and added braid.
My husband was able to repair the damaged table leg. Here is the refinished table with one of the leaves and the 6 chairs we were able to save. My blog post shows more pictures and gives more details of how we made this "free" set of furniture usable. We think it's mahogany. What is your opinion?

Nice job and, even with the attendant expenses, you have a nice large table and six chairs that should last a long, long while. With all the leaves in, you should be able to sit quite a large group of diners. As for the wood, it could also be cherry. After looking at your blog and seeing more pictures, the grain is very close and uniform, which is a characteristic of cherry. Mahogany displays a similar form. Both woods are beautiful. Enjoy your beautiful set.

Thank you for your comments and pointing out that it might be cherry. I think we've only put all three leaves in it one time so far then added a couple of non-matching chairs to seat everyone. It's quite heavy, but with the casters on the legs, it's easy enough to move.

@Sue P. I know what you mean. We have a huge Queen Anne walnut dining table with 5 leaves and it's banquet-sized when all the leaves are in place. And, like yours, our table is on casters. Can't imagine trying to muscle everything together otherwise.
