Wallpapering over laminate backsplash

by Joan
Has anyone wallpapered over their laminate backsplash with success? Are there any special steps I should take? Sand it first or would just washing it be ok? Any special products I should use? Any of your talented ideas would be beneficial. Thanks.

Hi! I absolutely HATE my backsplash. It's laminate just like the countertop. Can't wait to see the answers!

I have used a primer on my laminate cabinets before I painted them. This was advise from the paint store. It's called, X I M. The stuff is amazing. I just washed the cabinets and applied one coat of X I M and painted with an high end oil paint. It looks like the surface was baked on, The paint store said you can paint on the smoothest surface after using X I M.

I don't think I would wall paper a backsplash. Or is it where it couldn't possibly get wet or oil splashed on it. I would suggest some tiles instead. They have peel and stick ones. I would probably sand it before applying those also. http://www.menards.com/main/kitchen/backsplash-panels/c-8163.htm

I have painted my laminate back splash before with out a problem. I would use a primer (like 123) Then always use sizing when wallpapering. ( I recently moved, but my last house was an old farm house. It had those panels in the kitchen and bath to cover up the plaster walls.

I have used paintable paper on bathroom walls that had those 4x8 sheets on them & stayed on good.

I have successfully wallpapered my backsplash - absolutely no problem ! What do you have to lose if you do it ? It won't take much wallpaper and it won't take long to do it and if you don't like it, it will be easy to remove.

In my former home, I had a section of white laminate behind my cooktop that stuck out like a sore thumb. I decided to try applying beadboard wallpaper to it. I didn't do any prep work to the laminate except clean it really well with a degreasing cleaner. Then I just applied the wallpaper like I was putting it on a regular wall. Beadboard wallpaper is intended to be painted so I painted it the sage green color I had on my other kitchen walls. It went up easily and stuck to the laminate fine. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

    Hi Joan,

You can just wash it, but had you thought of using stick on tile covers or Contact?
