How to redo Formica counters/backdrop

I have a 30 yr old kitchen, with cheap press board cabinets, Formica counters and backdrop, and an ugly laminate floor. It needs serious updating on the serious cheap side!
One side of room!! Lots of wasted space!
Room is very small, ugly as .....
No vent fan for stove either!! Help!!!

OK Francesca, so assuming everything in the room is staying and we are just trying to pretty it up. Here's the plan: Remove the hardware and replace with something stainless like these IKEA ones: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/151584048453?lpid=82&chn=ps. We found them in a bargain outlet for about 1/4 of the IKEA price, but that will give you the style idea. Paint the cabinets a nice fresh white that co-ordinates with your appliances or pale creamy yellow to co-ordinate with the floor color. For the countertop, Home Depot carries many paints that make yours look like granite or concrete. This one: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Giani-Granite-1-25-qt-Chocolate-Brown-Countertop-Paint-Kit-FG-GI-CH-BR-KIT/203644686. One can costs approx $75. Sears makes a ventless hood that you can install over the stove: http://www.sears.com/kenmore-30inch-range-hood-5334/p-02253345000P. For an inexpensive backsplash, how about some peel and stick vinyl wallpaper in a fun color that will be washable and removeable: http://www.target.com/p/devine-color-diamond-wallpaper-horizon/-/A-15025199#prodSlot=medium_1_7&term=wallpaper. 1 roll is $29.99. Then paint the kitchen walls in a color that co-ordinates with the backsplash paper. (or vice versa, but either way, add some color : ) Take down the ruffled valance and replace with a matchstick bamboo blind or roman shade. As for the other side of the room where the dog crate is, I would knock out that shelf and that cabinet and replace it with a built-in corner bench with storage and a table to eat at, or a large hutch or sideboard (craigslist!) for more storage. You can even add shelving above that. You don't need to do this all at once. Just set a plan in place and then chip away at it, one thing at a time. Good luck!! Would love to see the final redo!

Vent over the stove should be a fairly straight forward install since it is an outside wall. Since you have a gas range this would be my first save for and tackle project. Backsplash should be fairly straight forward to, beadboard paneling or wallpaper is inexpensive and can be painted any color. I would tackle that odd dining counter corner first. Floor to ceiling cabinets, great as pantry or extra storage for dishes etc. I agree with others IKEA has some great kitchen stuff and keeps most styles for a good length of time. just make a master plan of what you would like it to look like then work towards it one section or project at a time. We did our kitchen that way all i need to finish is a small pull out cabinet next to the range and new floor. Project before that was beadboard paneling backsplash and new counter top. I reused faucet and we installed new kitchen sink I bought for $30.00 on ebay.

Your kitchen work layout looks efficient to me. Try to clear as many things as possible off your countertops. I would make some shelves above and below the unit that your TV is on. Then the TV, cookbooks, etc. could be placed above, and bulky or seldom-used items could be stored below. You could probably get the lumber at a ReStore and then paint it the same as your cabinets. Have seen lots of posts where people do some repairs and then paint their countertops. (Like the colour of the countertop as works well with your flooring, but see a bit of damage to it.) If you could get a deal on hardware, new handles will give the cabinets a new look.

Use a product called, Giani granite, diy giving your countertops a faux granite look. After applying it to your countertops it then becomes a solid surface which is safer than any expensive stone. You can purchase a recycled air vent for your stove, just be sure to always check and clean your vents. This requires the homeowners ability to use a level, have a good eye, basic electrical skill and 4 screws. Your floors- look up paper bag floors. You can do all of this for under $500.00 if you shop well and you release the diy inside. Good luck

Depending on the look you like, an option is to cover the counters with concrete, and polish and stain it as you like. Very cheap, very pretty for an industrial cool look. I would either tile the backsplash or concrete it as well, maybe leaving holes to put up small spice shelves or something. Or putting random tiles in the backsplash. New hardware on the cabinet doors, redo the countertop with a product called Gianni granite- its a paint technique- everything is included in the kit and it comes out amazing. New self stick tiles to freshen up the floor, and get as much stuff off the counters and put away as possible. You'll have yourself a bright new look!

You have the biggest issue of all - space - how about a narrow shelf under most of the top cabinets, 7" height? which would allow you to store a large number of small items cluttering the counters ? Then maybe you could put a VERY shallow(4"?) floor to ceiling cupboard on the wall at the right side of the frig?. Then completely reorganize your cupboards to put all smaller, narrower things into the new cupboard? Your kitchen would immediately look way bigger with everything hidden. Then you can make it all as light as possible, a new white floor and lighter backsplash - lots of super ideas for that in these pages.- Good luck !

all good ideas...What did you end up doing? You could also add trim on your cabinet doors. If the bulkheads are not hiding ducts or plumbing etc., you could remove them, raise your cupboards and put a shelf underneath. Otherwise, you could leave them, paint them the same colour as your cabinets, and add trim to them to make your cabinets look more substantial.
