A woman gave me these seeds and said they were a lemon tree. I thought the seed didn't look anything like a lemon seed.

It looks like it might me a variety of thyme? Maybe it was Lemon Thyme? Pinch off and crush a leaf and give it a sniff? Thyme with lemon undertones?
  • OnBlissStreet OnBlissStreet on Feb 28, 2015
I was going to say it looks a lot like the Thyme I have in my window.

It looks to me like Stellaria media aka Common Chickweed a weed. Here is a link: http://whatcom.wsu.edu/ipm/manual/blue/chickweed.html

Thanks Rhonda, I really need more weeds :) At least it is a cute weed.
  • Nancy Nesbitt Nancy Nesbitt on Feb 28, 2015
I agree with Rhonda. Sorry, but it is probably a weed. If you did plant "real" lemon tree seeds, they either didn't germinate yet or have rotted and won't. How long have the seeds been planted? You may want to Google "lemon tree seed" and check to see if you received true seeds and/or what type of conditions they need to germinate.

Are you sure you heard correctly? Could have said lemon Thyme. Does is have any lemon scent if you crush the leaves in your hands or smell or taste like thyme? This is a herb you use in cooking. Google Thyme. One of the images that comes up is stepping stone thyme and this looks similar to what you have there.

Looks like the lemon seeds didn't germinate but instead weed seeds that just happen to be in the soil did you use soil from your yard or a bag soil mix?

@365Designs I think Karen just heard wrong....it's lemon thyme, an herb, not a weed.

If this is lemon basil or thyme? Pull it up at once. Very invasive. Still trying to get it out of my garden after more than thirty years.

Pulled up 2 buckets full yesterday.

If what you planted is actually a lemon seed it has not sprouted yet. What you do have is a fast growing weed, (looks like Scarlet pimpernel, which has a cute flower) that has popped up first. A lemon seed will take a very long time to germinate. You can speed up the germination process by removing the seed coat of the lemon seed.

It looks like chickweed to me. When young, it's very nice in salads.

Rub it between your fingers and smell it. If it smells like lemon it's most likely a herb. I have lemon thyme and it looks a bit like this

hi just google image of a lemon tree!
  • Karen Jackson Karen Jackson on Mar 01, 2015
They were very tiny seeds and I planted them in Miracle Grow potting soil. I knew they looked nothing like a lemon seed but she said lemon tree. I have crushed a leaf and it smells like grass, I also tasted it and it tasted like grass. Think she was pulling a fast one on me. Live and Learn. Thanks for all the answers.

Looks like lemon thyme. I plant this as well as German thyme to use in cooking. Should have a bit of a lemony scent when you crush the leaves.

You actually can plant lemon seeds to get a tree. This is not a lemon tree, it's a weed. Just take the seeds from a lemon and plant in potting soil (not Miracle Grow) and cover planter with plastic wrap. After you see a little bit of green poking up, remove the plastic and grow as you would any other plant. I see you live in Kentucky, so to grow it to full size you will need a large planter that you can move to outdoors and back in. The way I used to grow any kind of citrus seed was with a terrarium - I'd just replant them in pots if I wanted to grow them to any size.

I worked in garden center for about 5 years, this looks like a weed, very aggressive and hard to get rid of if it gets a start in your beds. We fought this weed the whole time I worked there.

I grew a lemon tree and an orange tree from seeds I got out of the lemon and orange. I knew these were nothing like that. They were almost like poppy seeds.
  • Dee Dee on Mar 04, 2015

If it has a bristly feel to leaves, this is a weed. Form of chickweed I think. Find the roots and pull it up then take them far away or in garbage leaving your house. Don't discard in weed pile or woods.
