Stick curtain rod for rustic dorm room

Has anyone used a stick for a curtain rod? My son found a pretty straight stick that's about 3 ft long. I'm thinking of hanging it up with command hooks and using it to hang a valance in his dorm room. Has anyone done this?

I've used dowel rods, spoon handles, so why not? Make sure the command hooks are right size for the weight.

@Kathryn Fenech Russell The stick isn't very heavy and is about 1/2 " thick, so I think the command hooks might work, butI'll look at curtain rod hardware, too.

Not so sure the command hooks will hold the weight but you can try. Yes have done this before but hung mine with metal curtain holders/tie backs.

I've seen it done in rooms in magazines, it looked really nice and rustic! Don't know about the command hooks tho. You might need something a little more sturdy.

I have. The only issue I had was not being able to slide the curtains easily to open them but with a valance it shouldn't be a problem. Go for it! Make sure the ends of the stick fit into the hooks.

I used to have my house decorated in Old West/Native American style. We have Sparkleberry bushes here and the wood is VERY hard and lasts a long time after cutting. Be sure to remove all bark from the stick along with any bumps from unnecessary branches. Be sure to sand the stick. I used cafe rod hooks to hold up my curtains, with one in the center for support. Make sure the stick is the right size for the opening of the curtain slot. Also, be sure the stick does not ooze sap. I loved my stick curtain rods.

@Tony Susie Rizzo Why sand the stick? Thanks for reminding me to use a hook in the center of the 'curtain rod'.

Sounds like a great idea! Have considered this with birch brranches, but, never did it.
  • My neighbor did she used the dec. Brackets to hold the branch. I don't think command strips will hold it . also if you use tab top curtains it is easyer to get them on and off
