Terrarium plants

I'm planning on creating a fairy garden terrarium. The Terrarium is enclosed with plexiglass. My questions are:
Will Succulents from my garden thrive in it?
I live in Michigan its early March. If the succulents are ok to use, is it to early to pluck them from the garden? Some are in pots and some are in the ground.
What other type of plants will do well in the terrarium and pair well with succulents? I know I must be careful of plants that could sicken other ones in a terrarium.
I think that's all for now.

I learned the hard way to make sure and add sand to your dirt, with plenty of drainage under that....if you don't you will create a perfect haven for fruit flies! Succulents and cactus(sm) will do great. I also learned to use a little charcoal in my dirt. Good Luck!!!

Hi Keri, succulents a drought tolerant plants. They prefer open dry conditions and would do well in dish gardens. An enclosed terrarium creates a micro-environment suitable for tropical plants due to the trapped humidity. I have made many terrariums, see them here: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/craft/terrariums-in-all-shapes-and-sizes-2526595 I use a layer of charcoal at the bottom of my enclosed terrariums, this aids in preventing standing water from going sour and prevents fungal build up. Use 2" tropicals available at nurseries and pinch them back as they grow to maintain size.

Yep i know all about using charcoal, sand, pea rock, etc.. I really am wondering if its safe to bring in succulents from outside right now. Well I'm literally just finishing up reporting our indoor fairy garden and for the heck of it i plucked a few small shoots and added them.

That repotting not reporting..lol.. your right Sow and Dipity, for an enclosed succulents probably aren't the best choice. I think instead ill go with mosses. Cactus and tropical plants just aren't what I'm going for here since it will be fairy garden themed also. Thanks ladies!

I have an enclosed terrarium full of succulents, mine is glass, my plants thrive in it. I even have some planted inside shells that do great. I'm not sure about transplanting them at this point, I live in Wisconsin and love my succulents, but bring them in for the winter months. Good luck

You can plant succulents in a terrarium just don't put a top on it. Terrariums are like rainforests where tropical plants grow, any plant requiring very high humidity. Venus Fly Traps are wonderful terrarium plants. Succulents are dessert plants and like dry air not humid. Use a wide top jar or bowl and no top. Two tablespoons of water every two weeks or once a month. You'll just have to experiment. Good luck.
