Shabby Chic Fireplace Mantel With Painted Tiles

The fireplace in our master bedroom wasn't bad, but had some outdated flowered tiles on the surround. I also wanted a shabby chic look to match the rest of our bedroom. This is the third fireplace makeover we've done in a few months! Here's the result of the last and final one:

The sconce lights were gone when we bought the home on an online auction (foreclosure) so we found some industrial metal lights to complete our shabby look at Lowes. You can see the flowered tiles better in the next photo:
The inside looked dark and ready to swallow me up so I also painted that. I used a dark shade of gray leftover from another project. It's not so ominous now.
I used Zinsser Perma-White on the tiles. The flowers were dark colors, so it took about three coats to get it completely covered. It is very durable paint and I'm not worried about the heat bothering it since we put it on our other fireplace and it has withstood the heat just fine.
Visit my blog for more details and close up shots of the bed spring "vase", the shabby frames, and rag garlands. And.. to read about my scary encounter with the dark...

my husband built me a faux fireplace for my bedroom-I am doing everything in shabby chic-will it look silly if I cover the wood in a rose print material????
