Help! Family room makeover

I need ideas for how to decorate around the tv in our family room. TV will be centered and lowered but I have no idea what to add. Still playing around with furniture and other items. Help!

after lowering the TV, literally FRAME it with wide molding, or a beautiful picture/mirror frame if you are lucky enough to have those lying around. Then put large plants (I luv plants) on either side. Ta data!!!

Love your cowhide chair!The tv is too high,especially if you plan to keep the table underneath.I think I would try to either raise the table or replace it with something higher.I think I would try to "frame" the tv with 2 bookcases on either side.The wall is so large,it needs something more visual to fill in the space especially since the tv will be the focal point of your room.Keep the accessories in the bookcase large and sparse.Ideas like decorative or woven trays,large vases etc. no small pictures or small kicnacks.Several plants in large pots would also look nice.Love decorative palms if you have enough light.If you have low light,peace lilies or snake plants(also called mother in law plants,would add a lot of interest.I love that you painted that wall something other than white.Dark wood tones would be a nice contrast to the wall color.Have fun decorating!

Consider a long, low console (66"-84") with the TV just inches above it. I think, with your wall, the longer the better. Judging by the rest of the décor in your room, I would suggest something rustic. The TV does NOT need to be centered over it. Find the best position for the console that looks good against the wall. THEN decide the best location for TV viewing and put the TV there. If it turns out to be the center that's fine. But if it's off center it will also work. Just balance out the TV with something tall, like a lamp or tall vase, on the other end. Fill in with just a couple of wall items and some low pieces on the console, like stacks of books and objects de art. This will make your TV look less like a big black blob on the wall and more like an item in a pretty wall arrangement.

I've seen fireplace mantles under televisions. Maybe a faux mantle filled with candles would work. Or a gas fireplace with mantle. You do occasionally need one in Dallas.

Once you get the t.v. lowered and furniture placed where you want it, I would do a collage of framed black and white photos and other items of interest. Keep the frames simple and similar to each other. I like to add in some quirky items like you can find at Hobby Lobby. One example would be a large wooden letter, preferably in black, or the ampersand is always cool. You literally surround the t.v. with artwork, which helps to keep the large screened t.v. that we all love from jumping off the wall at you. And when it is off, there are other cool items of interest to view. Look on Pinterest for wall collages to get a better visual.

I'd suggest adding wainscoting on the lower wall, and possibly paint it white or a darker color below, then lower the TV to just above it. Then add a shutter on each side to make it similar to a window.

I like Kathy's suggestions. Do lower it and don't frame it or otherwise emphasize the TV, just put some interesting wall grouping up with it.

You could add floating shelves with cool items on either side (but not identically placed)..or rig up a track system with large art in two pieces you can open to watch TV or slide shut and conceal the TV...could be super amazing

Ikea has several console cabinets. Purchase 1, of your choice, then surround it with Billy bookcases, large or skinny, with or without glsss doors. You can also get one the length of the console and lay it horizontally over the TV between the two side cabinets. It gives you a reasonably priced entertainment/storage system to fill as you desire. I chose the espresso finish so my TV looks more like the furniture and doesn't call attention to itself.

Thanks for the great tips! well, unfortunately moving the TV is not an option, (unless I want to do sheetrock and paint repairs $$$) I'm hoping to take focus away from it with other focal items. Time to do some shopping. :) Great ideas, thanks again.

I built a frame around me tv and I personally love it, I feel it doesn't draw so much attention to it as my tv did floating alone without it, I feel it gave it a more finished look that made it seem to appear more as a wall art look, and took away from the start black electronic floating on my wall, It was so easy and so inexpensive too. Everyone has different tastes and it may not be yours, but I do have a pic of it on my fireplace redo post on my profile. If you would like to take a look? It may not be the look your going for but could spark another idea for you, It is funny how that can happen looking at a post and getting a whole new idea from it to personalize your space. I like to use metal scrollwork pieces for areas like this, either below or above the tv or other item. They add softness to the area because of the curved shapes. Buy one you love...I'm picky about the ones I get, as some look cheap. Keep an eye on hobby lobby.com or other online shops.
