This customer needed to stop their drafty fireplace. My suggestion was to install a Lock-Top II Chimney Damper. Our customer had a traditional fireplace throat damper that are very inefficient and even when it seems to be closed you can still feel a cold draft. The top sealing damper that we installed has a gasket that ensures a tight seal. Top dampers are very easy for any do it yourself homeowner to install to keep the cold out and keep the warmth in, which in turn significantly saves on home heating and cooling costs.
You don't need many tools, just a drill, masonry drill bit and a hammer.
With the supplied silicone cement, apply a generous bead to the top of the chimney flue.
Lower the stainless steel cable with the chain down the flue. The cable comes standard at 30' length. A 50' cable is available for taller chimneys.
Place the damper on the silicone firmly.
Locate the mounting bracket and and pre-drill two holes for the the anchors. Make sure to mount the mounting bracket 18" off the fireplace floor. Other manufacturers might have a different recommended clearance from the fireplace floor.
Grab your hammer and drive the anchors through the bracket and into the wall of the fireplace.
Fish the chain through the hole of the mounting bracket.
with the provided Alan wrench, locate the adjustable brass fitting on the chain assembly and loose the fitting.
Adjust the brass fitting to just under the mounting bracket. one you have it in place take the Alan wrench and tighten the fitting.
Cut off any excess cable and lock the brass fitting on the mounting bracket. This customer was extremely pleased to have a draft free chimney!
