My stepson gave me an old bottle he found under some tree roots. Any suggestions on how I can clean all the dirt and nastiness out of it?

I have alot of experience cleaning bottles since i made all of the wine bottle centerpieces for my brothers wedding last year. My first suggestion is simply soaking it in a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water with a splash of dish soap. Hold the bottle under the water until its full of water and sinks to the bottom of sink/bucket. Soak 24 hours or overnight then rinse and rinse and rinse. :-) if this doesnt work let me know.

Put some sand inside the bottle and then pour some water into it. Shake it up and pour it out. Then clean with soap and washer and rinse

My mom uses denture cleaners, you know those fizzy tablets? Let me know if it works!

This is what I do and it has worked for me ALWAYS! Even with the dirt filled bottles. Soak them in water to remove the dirt as much as possible and then fill with hot water and cheapest denture cleaning tablets and drop it in there. Leave it set until the blue disappears in the water. Then simply rinse it and turn it upside down to dry.

Fill the bottle with HOT water and add a couple of denture cleaning tablets. Works like a charm.

Try some coarse kosher salt and a good amount of lemon juice. Shake and swirl and let it sit between shaking.

I use dry, uncooked rice and water and shake. If there is anything left, add vinegar, let sit for an hour or longer, then repeat with the rice.
