Front door paint colour

Question

I would like to know what colour to paint our front door. We are planning on adding a white railing in the next few months and want the door to stand out. We are north-west facing and since there are no trees in front of the house, we get a lot of sun (just in case that is a factor for paint colour!). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I would go with what no one else on the block has. How about a teal color? Or even burnt orange? If that is too bold then think about a medium blue/gray color. Go with what you love so that when you pull up to your house you think to yourself 'Oh how I love my front door'

Nice. Apparently red is bad for fading on cars, at least. (Had a raspberry T-bird painted twice!) With your neutrals, almost any colour would work - red, black, etc. I think a brighter tone blue-green would be a less common colour, and also look nice. I'd use black house numbers and mailbox or arty piece to the left of the door to balance out the bush on the far right. Might also think about a large black jug with real or artificial spikes/chairs on the veranda. Might be a thought to curve your flower bed into the large sidewalk area beside the steps so there is not so much linear effect with the addition of the railing..

Thanks everyone so far for your input! I like the idea of a colonial red, but teal sounds good too...decisions decisions! I just wish I could see what it looks like before hand.
Marion, thanks for the design to, too. We do have the garden coming down the side of the walk way - this summer we plan on planting some colorful annuals. And hopefully the railing will be complete!

Here's an idea--Take a pic and print it out on computer paper with enough copies to use all your colors of interest.  Use colored pencils to see which one pleases you the most.  I vote colonial red and black accents on the porch--like two black rocking chairs and a  small table with a beautiful fern

Blue, but not a navy blue. Some lighter blue. And by the way, that is the cutest little house. Now I'm dying to see the inside. :)

I like a red door. I had a color mixed for my door it was a spacific red with a little magenta  and black in it. I took a color sample to home Depot and they matched and mixed it for me. I live in the south and at the time my front door got a lot of sun but I had no fading.

It's just paint, if you don't like the color you can paint it something different!  I think Anne Slone chalk paint color Arles(golden yellow) would look pretty.  But you can't go wrong with red.  Have fun with it!

I love bright yellow, red, or blue.  Yet, this is only if you have a muted cool color house like slate silver, or white with black shutters.
 If you enjoy your warm tan house color (which I do) perhaps a burnt deep red or deep midnight blue...

I love your home.  Adding a porch is perfect.   Benjamin Moore has a great red called Sun Dried Tomato that looks beautiful with taupe/ brown colors.

Go for a slightly muted red....not a fire engine red. I did go to Lowes Hardware and picked out about 10 to 12 red sample cards. (Just remember the lighting in the store cast a yellow hue on everything.) Then I cut the bottom part off which left only a red square. Taped them in two rows on a piece of white copy paper. I then taped the entire display outside beside the door. After looking at the display for a few days, you will certainly decide which is your favorite. You can do this with any color.

I think the white wood would look quite special.  Would an all black fence be too much do you think? Perhaps the black might help the fence 'disappear'. Perhaps with white fence slats, and black poles, the fence  might look 'bitsy'. It's hard to visualise.  Or you could just go for a total white fence which would suit the cottage appearance of your home, which is beautiful by the way.  A deep burgundy as one of the ladies who replied suggested would also look terrific and if you chose burgundy then do an all burgundy fence. But with some bright greenery perhaps if you go for black or burgundy which would really set it off. If you go for burgundy, maybe you could find some plants that would pick up the burgundy.
